Mens Health

It is only recently that men have started to look after their health.  Previous to this, information on many issues to do with men’s health were confined to medical textbooks.  We now hear about the male menopause and how real it is where men complain of a decreased motivation, lowered mood and a decrease in sexual performance in middle aged and older men.    Prostrate health is also a big health concern these days with it rapidly increasing and being predicted to be the most common cancer in men within 20 years.

Nutrition can really help here and learning to avoid risk factors including:

  • Eating  too much dairy and meat
  • Too little fibre in the diet ( especially fruits and vegetables),
  • Eating too much saturated fats
  • Smoking
  • Exposure to hormone disrupting chemicals and pesticides and high levels of testosterone
  • Obesity.

Do you know that according to a recent survey in April 2011,
that 26% of men are obese now in 20011 v  only  8% in 1990

Some Facts:

  • Obesity for men has tripled in just 20 years !!
  • Only 18% of men between 36-50 years are a healthy weight, 1/3 are obese and 49% are overweight.
  • Obesity levels for men aged 51-64 has risen to 42% and 59% of men over the age of 65 are overweight with just 24% of women in this category obese. This was calculated using the BMI formula.

Salt Intake for men

  • Men are eating too much salt hidden in processed and cured meats and breads
  • 1 in 5 men has high blood pressure in the 18-64yrs) versus just 1in 14 in women.
  • Both Men and women are watching over 18hours of TV a week  and these sedentary lifestyles are not helping health.

Testimonial

“I recently went for a few consultations with Mary after a friend of mine had recommended her.  My cholesterol was high and I needed to lose some weight and I was feeling very uptight and stressed a lot of the time.  Mary examined my diet and showed my how I could improve and she set goals to help me achieve my target and I now have so much more energy, do not feel as stressed and have taken up going to boot camp twice a week which has really helped too  – I now understand how the combination of exercise and good Nutrition really work”
