With 18% of our population obese and another 39% overweight, we can see that since 1990, the prevalence of obesity in Ireland has increased by 67%. In children, as with adults, obesity contributes to raised blood pressure, abnormal blood fat levels, chronic inflammation, increased blood-clotting tendency and raised blood insulin levels and type 2 diabetes mellitus. This grouping of cardiovascular disease risk factors, known as the insulin resistance syndrome, has been identified in children as young as 5 years of age.

It’s also official that dieting makes us fat. When your food intake is restricted, your body thinks there’s a shortage of food and it doesn’t know how long this “famine “ is going to last, as a result it does the following:  Firstly, it slows down its metabolism so you don’t burn so many of the calories that it thinks are scarce.  Secondly, it lets go of muscle and water first to preserve your fat stores.  The overall result is you’re losing water and muscle and slowing your metabolism.  The result is that you eat like a bird, but after an initial loss, your weight plateaus.  When you eat normally again, the weight piles on as fat.

What can we do?

If you are overweight or obese, you can check with your doctor if you have other risk factors such as as high blood pressure, diabetes and high cholesterol. By even  losing a small amount of weight, it will improve your overall health and help reduce your risk of heart disease.

Good nutrition has proven to be a key factor in improving health.   By eating  a low GL diet and stabilising your blood sugar, you can control your weight.

Daily exercise is vital also as it stabilises the blood sugar and the combination of exercise and a low GL diet will have positive results.

The Process

  •  Questionnaire form is sent  to client to be filled in and emailed back prior to meeting up on first consultation
  • First Consultation – client is weighed and BMI taken, we discuss details on completed questionnaire including the possibility of any food intolerances and we focus on the key areas showing up plus discuss goals for next visit.  Client is then given a folder which includes a weight loss card, some recipes and healthy snack options to suit client’s tastes plus  tips  to follow to achieve a healthy diet and lifestyle for the long run.  After visit, Mary prepares an Action Plan for each of her clients based on all of the above and client normally returns within 2 weeks but in some cases, clients might wish to return each week for a weekly weight in and quick chat.
  • Follow Up Visits client is weighed in, goals assessed, recipes and tips discussed, any obstacles discussed and new goals set plus more recipe tips given.  Different topics are covered in each follow up visit including, how to read a food label, how to make a healthy immune boosting or weight loss smoothie, how to make a healthy breakfast including a simple 5 minute granola that can be kept for a week,  how to make soups that taste really good,portion sizes explained,  how to basically eat and feel better and also lose weight and how to make this diet and lifestyle last long term
